0n the 9th and 10th of September 2006, 62 club members and guests went on our annual outing to the nearby County of Wiltshire. We were blessed with fine weather over the two days.

The farm covers an area spanning over 1100 acres in total, much of it was ploughed and rolled, with all of the rest of the land mainly in stubble. As club members we are always careful about the land ensuring that all holes are carefully filled in.

It wasn't long before some great finds were coming out the ground these included: Roman silver and bronze coins some of which were in amazing condition after nearly 1700 years in the ground.

Many hammered coins were being unearthed as well as cut quarters and half cuts. I personally saw a stunning Roman fan tail brooch, as well as two other Roman brooches although they were somewhat bent from 'plough strikes'.

Possibly the find of the weekend was found by club member Jon Gozney with a 16th century silver gilt clothes fastener. This has to be declared as treasure under English law as it is over 300 years old and is made of silver or gold. The Coroner for Wiltshire will decide whether it is 'treasure' whereupon he will seize it for the Crown (with full monetary value offered) or disclaim it and return it to the owner.

One particular field was renamed the 'button' field as there were literally hundreds of them being found. Always remember that the next button could just be a hammered coin!

The owner of the land blessed us with his presence at the end of the rally, and he remarked at the amount and diversity of the finds. He has invited us back next year, so hopefully we will see you all there.

Regards to you all,

Paul.
