Annual Awards for 2003

The awards for 2003 were presented during the monthly meeting held on January 19th 2004. Also accomplished was the tricky task of re-electing the Club Chairman. Paul Rainford ran against himself as incumbent in a tight race, finally being re-elected by a narrow margin consisting of all members present. Mark Benwell had already recently taken up the reins of Club Secretary (Audrey Savage having stood down from the post last December), so no vote was required to keep him busy for the forseeable future. Mark Gatter was elected to the committee as Public Relations Officer, which means he has to start taking better photos for the website.

Audrey Savage was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers in recognition of all her hard work as Club Secretary. Many thanks, Audrey.

Awards were presented in the following categories:

Coin of the Year

Paul Rainford (left) presents the award to Martin Savage who won with his Saxon 'Wodin Head' 'Coin of the Month' of last August.

Artifact of the Year

Chairman Paul Rainford presents the award to Kevin McNie who won with his (treasure trove!) Saxon pendant in September.

Beach Find of the Year

Paul Rainford presents the award to Peter Child who won with the Edward IV groat he found in December.

Detectorist of the Year

This award was won jointly by Dave Cobb and Kevin McNie. As Dave is currently in New Zealand, Kevin accepted the trophy for both of them.

Club Person of the Year

This is awarded to the person deemed to have most benefitted the club during the preceeding year. And...Paul Rainford won it. Here he is receiving his shield from member Leslie Fraser.

Display of the Year

Last, but not least...finally in February the votes were cast for Display of the Year for 2003. The picture shows the winner, Martin Savage, receiving his award from Paul Rainford.

Congratulations to everyone!

Incidentally, and by way of inspiring those among us who sometimes feel discouraged at not finding very much at all, both Peter Child and Kevin McNie are 'newbie' detectorists, having taken up the (world's greatest) hobby only last year. Peter has already found his first hoard, and Kevin has found two separate objects classified as treasure. Shame upon them both is all I can say. So get out there, and start detecting! It's your turn next...
